First-Year Design Engineering Challenge

As part of their ENGR020: Introduction to Professional Practices course first-year engineering students are presented with an engineering problem. They are given one day to design and construct a solution. Students will be rewarded with an enhanced knowledge of the design process, stronger teamwork skills, and a better understanding of the engineering profession.

2007 Project
For the 2007 project students will be asked to create a microcontrolled electromagnetic crane model to remove toxic scrap metal from a mine shaft. The crane body will be made of PVC pipe and the electromagnet and motor will be controlled by a microcontroller. Teams will be judged based on the optimization as well as functionality of their design.
